The smallest species are often the easiest to miss.

At Zoos SA, we care for some of the world’s most recognisable animals.

But conservation is also about the species many people may never see.

Even those weighing just a few grams.

Animals like the critically endangered Mallee Emu-wren, one of Australia’s rarest small birds.

A species once lost from South Australia

But, hope is returning to the mallee...

Small enough to sit on your fingertips.

With fewer than 4,000 birds left in the wild, every population matters.

Bushfires once wiped the Mallee Emu-wren from South Australia entirely.

For a time, this species was gone.

But today, there is hope, thanks to Zoos SA’s conservation efforts.

At Monarto Safari Park, Zoos SA is leading a dedicated breeding program helping give this species a second chance.

In a world-first achievement, zoo-bred Mallee Emu-wrens have now been released back into the wild.

Months later, their distinctive birdsong was heard again.

Where your support goes

Conservation breeding

Supporting specialist care and breeding programs.

At Monarto Safari Park, specialist teams are helping breed and care for Mallee Emu-wrens as part of long-term recovery efforts. Each successful hatchling represents an important step forwards.

Habitat recovery

Helping protect and monitor mallee ecosystems

Healthy spinifex habitat is essential for the survival of the Mallee Emu-wren. Conservation efforts help monitor habitat conditions and support the protection of the fragile mallee landscapes these birds depend on.

Future releases

Supporting the return of birds to the wild.

Carefully planned releases are helping return zoo-bred birds to their natural environment. Ongoing monitoring helps conservation teams better understand how released birds adapt and survive in the wild.

This is what progress looks like

At Monarto Safari Park, Zoos SA is continuing vital conservation work to help secure a future for the critically endangered Mallee Emu-wren.

Over the past three years, 26 birds have successfully hatched and fledged through the conservation breeding program, including 11 in the most recent season.

Your support helps continue this hands-on work, supporting specialist care, breeding, habitat monitoring, and future releases into the wild.

Every step forward helps strengthen recovery efforts for one of Australia’s rarest small birds.

This is what progress looks like.

Patient, quiet, but real.
